It’s not something any of us like to think about, but it’s something we must.
Over the past few weeks at Sandbach Animal Rescue, we’ve taken in several cats from the families and friends of owners who have passed away with no provision made for their pets. It’s a situation that’s sadly more common than you might expect.
Our Cats Are Family
Our cats are part of the family. When an owner passes away, these helpless pets are left relying on those around them to find a new home. Just like us, cats suffer from stress. They can become depressed and withdrawn, and nobody wants that for their beloved companion.
Why Older Cats Struggle the Most
Older cats are particularly difficult to rehome. Health concerns start to creep in, vet bills can be expensive, and many rescues simply cannot afford to take on elderly cats with ongoing medical needs.
But what if they came with a financial safety net? A small fund set aside to cover vet costs and keep them comfortable in their later years would make all the difference to a rescue willing to take them in.
What You Can Do
It doesn’t take much to make sure your cats are looked after:
- Make a will and include your pets in it.
- Tell your family and friends what your wishes are.
- Contact your chosen rescue and let them know your plans.
- Consider setting aside funds to support your cat’s care if they outlive you.
The Reality Right Now
As we write this, we have five cats in our care whose owners have passed away. Only one of those families knew what the owner’s wishes were for their pet.
We will always do everything we can to help. But as a charity that relies entirely on the kindness of our supporters, our funds can only stretch so far, even though the number of cats who need our help never seems to end.
Please don’t leave your beloved companion to the hands of fate. A little planning now could make all the difference.
