Late one Sunday evening, a cat was found close to our rescue centre in Wheelock. She was clearly in a great deal of pain, so our volunteers took her straight to the emergency vets.
Her name, we now know, is Cassie. She is 15 years old, a beautiful long-haired black-and-white girl, and despite everything she has been through, she purrs through the pain.
The vets found that Cassie has a burst facial abscess and severe dental disease. Her teeth are so painful that she struggles to eat properly and drools from the discomfort. For now, we are keeping her comfortable and building up her strength with soft mousse and soups. Once she is well enough, she will need a dental operation to treat the condition in her mouth.
Somewhere, a family may be looking for her
The good news is that Cassie is microchipped. The frustrating news is that the telephone numbers registered to her chip no longer ring.
Her chip records show that she previously lived in Huish, near Merton in Devon. It’s very possible that her family moved over the years and simply never updated her details. Somewhere out there, there may be people wondering where their girl has gone.
If you recognise Cassie, know someone who may have owned her, or have any information at all that could help us reunite her with her family, please get in touch. And if you can, please share this page. Sharing costs nothing and may be the thing that gets her home.
Cassie’s story is also a reminder of why we bang the drum about microchipping. A chip is only as good as the details behind it. If you’ve moved house or changed your number, it takes a few minutes to update your cat’s record, and it could be the difference between a reunion and a mystery.
Here’s why microchipping matters, and how to check yours is up to date.
Help us care for Cassie
Emergency treatment, ongoing medication, special food and the dental operation Cassie needs all add up to a significant cost for a small, volunteer-run rescue. If you’re able to make a donation towards her care, every penny goes directly to giving her the treatment she needs while we search for her family. No donation is too small.
You can also help with the practical things Cassie and our other cats need through our Amazon Wish List.
Let’s find Cassie’s family, and give this lovely old girl the happy ending she deserves.
